Even though every maths teacher will say it's impossible, seven easily divides into five. It appears to be a simple enough equation for BMW's propellorheads following our first drive of the seventh-generation 5-series sedan in Portugal. It feels as though there is clearly defined formula that links the German brand's flagship 7-series and its all-important new mid-sized sedan.

The 5-series arrives in Kiwi showrooms in February. The entry 520d will give you $10 change from $100k and delivers 140kW/400Nm, with Combined economy of just 4.3 litres per 100km. The 530d starts at $133,900 and has a new-gen 3.0-litre turbo-diesel with 195kW/620Nm (4.7 l/100km). The flagship $142,900 540i has a six-pot petrol with 250kW/450Nm (6.7 l/100km).
