The Microsoft Surface Book was one of the most successful PC devices of last year.

Microsoft pulled off a major surprise with the launch of its first-ever laptop, which won praise for its powerful hardware and excellent battery life.

Now it seems the company is hard at work finalising preparation for its next generation Surface Book - and the finished device could be launching sooner than thought.

A report from DigiTimes claims that the Surface Book 2 has already entered production, and will be unveiled within the next few weeks.

The new device will also feature a significant design change to its predecessor, with Microsoft reportedly set to make the Surface Book 2 a standalone laptop.

The original device featured a detachable screen that could double as a tablet, however it appears Microsoft is set to drop this feature in favour of a classic clamshell design.
