A new race series for pre-1966 Porsche 911s has been launched by Peter Auto, the French-based historic race promoter.

To be called the 2.0L Cup, the series will start with three races at Peter Auto events in 2018, covering Spa, Dijon and Paul Ricard. There are already plans to expand the series in 2019 by adding a race in England.

Despite spiralling values for the 2-litre short chassis 911s from up to 1966, UK-based Porsche specialist Lee Maxted-Page believes there is sufficient demand to support standalone races. The target is 40 cars per race, with some notable former Porsche racers sharing cars.

Joint series creator James Turner from 2L Racing Group said: "The Porsche 911 is rightly regarded as one of the world's greatest sportscars and, in conjunction with the 70th anniversary of Porsche in 2018, we are delighted to launch this exciting new one-make historic race series.

"Working with Lee Maxted-Page, we have put together the largest ever database of early SWB Porsche 911s eligible to race.

"Key teams Historika and Tuthill Porsche have also had input into the regulations."
