To celebrate its centenary and explore a path for the coming 100 years, BMW indulged its three car brands with an intellectually rigorous “What If?” design exercise. In a strict financial climate where most “concept vehicles” have devolved into thinly disguised production cars based on current engineering, BMW Vision Next 100 is a refreshing dash of Big Thought, surpassing the shallow intellectual premise of 1950s GM Motorama cars, and certainly rating greater sociological merit than the crazy design indulgences of the 1980s Japanese “bubble economy.”

“All of these vehicles have common threads,” says Ian Robertson, BMW board member charged with sales and marketing. “They all are zero emissions, they all have artificial intelligence, they are all digitally connected, and all will recognize and serve your individual needs.”

Clearly, BMW drew from the same intellectual stream that gave us the Oxford Martin School paper entitled “Technology at Work,” which explores the positive and negative potentials of a robotic future.
